Gurbakhsh Singh was studying for F.Sc at Sialkot but had to abandon studies due to financial constraints. He worked as a clerk for some time before joining Thomson Engineering College (now IIT), Roorkee, to get a diploma in civil engineering in 1917. He then joined the army and was deployed in Baghdad. Two years later he resigned and moved to the US to earn a B.Sc in civil engineering from Michigan in 1922. His magazine was an instrument of socio-literary revolution, demolishing irrational beliefs and superstitions

He is an officer of 1982 batch of Indian Railway Services of Signal Engineers (IRSSE). Shri Singh is B.E. in Electronics and Communication Engineering from IIT Roorkee.

Microsoft has appointed Rajiv Kumar as the new Managing Director of Microsoft India (R&D) Private Limited (MIRPL), replacing Anil Bhansali, who held this role for six years. An IIT Roorkee alumnus and a master’s in Computer Science from the University of Texas (the US), Rajiv joined Microsoft in Redmond in 1992 as a campus-hire.

AK Gupta has taken over as the Director (Operations) in the Board of ONGC Videsh, the international petroleum company of India. He brings over three decades of experience in various capacities in domestic and overseas operations. He was most recently the Asset Manager Designate of Assam and prior to that Asset Manager Silchar, ONGC. Earlier, as Head of Business Development in ONGC Videsh, he managed the global business development activity of the company. In his first stint with ONGC Videsh, he managed ONGC Videsh assets in diverse geographies.

An Indian Railway Service of Engineers (IRSE) officer and a gold medallist engineer from IIT-Kanpur (M. Tech.) and IIT-Roorkee (B.E.), Kumar Keshav took over as LMRC Managing Director on August 18, 2014, and has not taken even a single leave since then. The whole project work so far has been completed under the astute leadership of the incumbent Managing Director in the last above four and a half years.

The doyen of Indian Photographers, Lala Deen Dayal was born in 1844 at Sardhana in Meerut in United Provinces. He received technical education at Thomason Civil Engineering College in Roorkee after which he joined as head estimator and draftsmen in the Public Works Department at Indore. The ruler of Indore, Maharaja Tukoji II, encouraged him to set up his studio there. Sir Henry Daly the Agent to the Governor-General encouraged him. According to his Memoirs, he was thus able to obtain the patronage of Lord North Brook the Governor-General of India in 1874.

Harish Kumar decided to take a break from work. Armed with an M.Sc from IIT Roorkee and an M.Tech from IIT Delhi, by 2012, he’d almost spent two decades in the telecom space. IIT alumni establish a digital library at Jhajjar village
A group of IIT alumni from New Delhi, Roorkee and Kharagpur has established a digital library at Government Senior Secondary School in the district’s Palra village.
It has access to the digital library of IIT-Kharagpur, where more than 1.5 crore books on several subjects are available in 16 languages.

Researchers from IIT Roorkee have developed organic dyes in collaboration with CSIR-NCL Pune that can increase the efficiency of Dye-Sensitised Solar Cells (DSSC). The team of researchers led by Dr. M. Sankar, Associate Professor, Department of Chemistry, IIT Roorkee, have worked to improve the photovoltaic conversion efficiencies of an organic dye called porphyrin for DSSC applications.
